For a few years now, the Xbox 360 three red lights problem has been one of the major concerns for Xbox 360 users. This is because for some unexplainable reason, after a few months of excellent gaming experience, this popular gaming console will just refuse to start and hence, lay useless. For most gamers and reviewers, this hardware problem is another backlash for Microsoft, the maker of the device, as they have been well known for various hardware and software issues such as the freezing and crashing of their other products such as the Windows operating system and Zune player.
The Xbox 360 three red lights is also known as the "red ring of death " as characterized by the simultaneous flashing of three red lights on what is known as the "ring of light" on the front of the Xbox 360 console. There are actually four lights in the device (one light for each quadrant) but the light at the upper right quadrant is the only light that does not flash red. These lights are supposed to be flashing green but when it starts to flash a red light then it is an indication that there is a hardware problem. Furthermore, as there is a light indicator in each quadrant, it also represents a particular problem for each quadrant that requires specific troubleshooting.
There are a few reasons why the Xbox 360 three red lights occur. First of all, many believed that the hardware should not be enclosed in a very tight area and that it should be able to "breathe." Most devices that constantly heats up contain small fans that pump out air. The Xbox 360 however does not have this mechanism so it might be really a good idea to put your Xbox 360 in an open area or on top of a box.
Another more serious possible reason why there are Xbox 360 three red lights is because the gaming console was manufactured poorly. This could be the reason why the GPU soldering joint easily gets loose when the device overheats and hence, the screen freezes and the flashing red lights show.
As mentioned, the Xbox 360 three red lights indicate a particular problem that is unique for each quadrant. The red light on the first section indicates that there is a general hardware failure which means that the Xbox 360 could be really malfunctioning. In this case, you may just have to "powercycle" the device by unplugging the cables for about 10 seconds. If one of the three red lights is on the second section, this could be caused by overheating. However, if the problem is on the third quadrant, then you may already need the help of a professional technician.
However, if all the Xbox 360 three red lights appear simultaneously, you might want to address the issues one by one before you call the help of a Support Center if all possible resolutions were already made and the problem still stays.
